Description

1913 Edmonton Alberta Government House Ink Pen Drawing By Aeris Osborne

2022 Alberta Artist-In-Residence Project- 1913 Edmonton Alberta Government House Ink Pen Sketch was my 1st sketch of the series before painting on canvas.

Story:

Alberta Government House is the former vice-regal residence to the province’s first 6 Lieutenant Governors who made this elegant Jacobean Revival-style mansion their home. It was closed as a vice-regal residence in 1938, with the building serving in various roles over the next 40 years. After an extensive restoration and partial modernization project in the mid-1970s, Government House was re-opened as a government conference centre in 1976. It was declared a Provincial Historic Resource in 1985, and a National Historic Site in 2013. (Credit: Alberta.ca)

Designed by Provincial architect Richard Palin Blakey, this three-story mansion was completed in 1913. Constructed of brick, the exterior walls were covered with sandstone from a quarry near Calgary and reworked by stonemasons brought from Scotland. Designed with Scottish Baronial elements, the building is large in scale with asymmetrical façades and grand decorations including large bay windows, high gabled roofs with dormers, balconies, and uniform groups of rectangular windows. This building was the official residence of the Province’s first six Lieutenant Governors: George H.V. Bulyea, Robert G. Brett, William Egbert, William L. Walsh, Philip C.H. Primrose, and John C. Bowen. Here they hosted state receptions, visiting royalty and other dignitaries. (Credit:historicplaces.ca)
