2022 Alberta Artist-In-Residence Project- It is my 9 th of the 10 Alberta Old Buildings series.
Constructed in 1921, The Banque d’Hochelaga building represents the early commercial development of St. Albert. It is the only surviving commercial building of the era and is associated with the Chamber of Commerce’s early efforts to attract banking instructions to St. Albert. The Banque d’Hochelaga is significant for its ties to St. Albert’s business community, particularly to many Francophone families who arrived in the area from Quebec and the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The corner lot originally housed the Royal Hotel before the Quebec-based Banque d’Hochelaga built this branch in the 1920s. It has seen many tenants since, including as the Rainbow Cafe in the 1940s, the Bank Of Montreal in the 1950s and 1960s, and as a retail location for Clayworks, the Bridal House, and Profiles Public Art Gallery (later the Art Gallery Of St. Albert) in the late 1980s and 1990s.s. Through all these changes, the Banque d’Hochelaga building retains two of its bank vaults and sits on its original corner lot. The City of St. Albert purchased the local landmark in 2000 and it remains one of St. Albert’s most recognizable buildings today.
The original structure, built in 1920, was the first bank of St. Albert, and has most recently evolved into the town’s public art gallery – featuring the work of local Canadian artists as well as hosting community workshops and events. (Credit: Art Gallery Of St. Albert)
